I've not posted anything on the tragedy that unfolded in America yesterday.  Mainly because it was a tragedy.  One mad / sick / insane whatever-label-you-want-to-use "person" took the lives of many innocent children and adults.

I don't believe that there is any easy answers here - any easy ways to stop tragedies like this happening in the future.  However, I've posted the link above because I think it echos many of my thoughts much more articulate than I could have done.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who were involved in this tragedy.

Be kind to those you encounter you never know the future.

Welcome

Just wanted to say a quick welcome to all those popping in from Stephen's place "Standing outside looking in".

I've not written much this week - tied up with work and sick kids - but I generally try to post a couple of times a week.  So pull up a chair and have a look through the archives!

Fun site for kids

Over the last couple of days Miss 7 has been challenging the rest of us to a game of checkers or chess.

I played her in chess and was surprised at how well she played. She was a bit sketchy on the all of the rules but did have an understanding of the basics and wasn't bad at strategy.

So after the game I dug out a website that I had come across about 6 months ago and sat down with her to work through some of it.

I like the way that it is presented even if I think they spend too long on each topic for littlies. Anyway, if you've got a child who is interested in learning chess check (lol) it out here.

I LIKE.

Often I am hunting through my blog to find a specific picture, which, of course, I can't remember when I posted it or what section I put it in.

However, I have just learnt that you can use Google Image search to return all pictures on a site:

1. http://www.google.com/imghp (or just go to the normal google search page and choose Images)

2. type in site:andwebaddress e.g.




3. Press enter and there you are:

Was shown this program by a friend today.

It shows you what is on the other side of the globe from any position that you pick.

You can zoom right down to house number level too.

Perth is directly opposite the Bermuda Triangle - so now I know why socks disappear!

The difference between COLD, SEASONAL FLU and H1N1 SYMPTOMS.

Based on this I've only got a seasonal flu not H1N1 (I've been feeling really bad for the last couple of days) going to try and get a Drs apt today as diagnosing yourself from a website isn't probably the smartest thing to do.

Wow ... Free Education on Offer

Just discovered (by way of Sippican Cottage) that MIT offers FREE courses on its web site.

Apparentely there are 1900 courses, all with lecture notes, assignments and related resources.

The course that has caught my eye first is 9.57J / 24.904J Language Acquisition. Off to so some reading.

ED Waiting Times

ED in Western Australia now have their waiting times shown on a website. The information is updated every six minutes. Apart from wondering how many resources were diverted to this project rather than being spent on reducing the ED waiting times I do like the idea ….
