Awhile back I blogged about a farm in the US facing drought with the title of "you never want to see this ...". Drought is awful to contemplate and the loss of crops is truly depressing.

Thursday - Showers
So they say. Maybe I'm tempting fate by blogging this but they're forecasting RAIN for THURSDAY - that's like the day after tomorrow.
The better news (sort of)# is that they're forecasting this weather for the next couple of days:
Friday......Early morning shower possible.......Min 9.....Max 22
Saturday....Chance of an evening shower.........Min 7.....Max 25
Sunday......A few showers.........................Min 15....Max 24
Monday......Morning shower........................Min 13....Max 23

PERTH'S equal-biggest dam is just 9 per cent full - its lowest level ever - sparking fears of a water shortage after months of record-breaking heat and drought.
After Perth's hottest March in a century, longest period without rain and lowest inflow to dams on record, the Water Corporation said the situation was "dire".
"It's almost getting to the point where we can't rely on our dams for any water," spokesman Ben Jarvis told The Australian.
He said the 138-gigalitre South Dandalup Dam had only 12GL stored, and the similar-sized Serpentine Dam was only 22 per cent full with 31GL - and a lot was unusable "mud and muck" on the bottom. One of the smaller dams, Samson, was completely dry.
"It is dire. There's only so long you can go with almost no rainfall without having to have some cutbacks," Mr Jarvis said.
"We've identified a shortfall of 76 billion litres that needs to met by either inflow into our dams or reductions in consumption, and unfortunately we only had about 13 billion litres in total for the entirety of last winter spread across our 13 dams."
In a normal year, the inflow was about 100GL.
Mr Jarvis said Perth used about 1GL of water a day but the last drop of rain was 62 days ago, when 0.4mm fell.
Bureau of Meteorology statistician John Relf said many records had been smashed.
"The previous driest two-month period for February-March in Perth was 0.8mm back in 1877 and in 1973. Both those years had 0.8mm - so this is the driest in over 130 years," he said.
"It was also the sunniest March in more than 110 years, with 11 hours of sunshine a day compared to the average 9.5 hours, and in the last three months Perth also had its hottest nights on record."
We NEED rain, desperately. So let's all hope that the weather bureau has got it right and that it does rain on Thursday.
[Update]Just heard on the news that there are now 5 southwest towns which are totally reliant on water being trucked in. I've never heard of this happening before.[/Update]

Woo hoo - RAIN
Yes, I know it's the middle of summer, and yes, I know I was complaining about the heat the other day ... but I'm not complaining now (well, except for the humidity). IT'S RAINING !!!!!! WOO HOO.

It could have been worse ....
While the freezing conditions sweeping parts of Europe (and America, if some of my friends are to be believed) are not a laughing matter, I did enjoy this story:
Reluctant rescue for seven people trapped inside British pub for nine days
IN what sounds like a beer drinker's dream, seven people were trapped inside a British pub for nine days by a ferocious snowstorm and 16-foot (4.8m) snow drifts.
Five staff members and two local residents were barricaded in the Lion Inn in Blakey Ridge, Kirbymoorside, North Yorkshire from November 26, but under the most optimal of conditions: plenty of food and drink and since the pub is also a bed and breakfast, there were even beds to sleep in, the Mail on Sunday said.
A snowplow finally made its way over the North York moors to the pub on Saturday, allowing those inside to leave, the BBC reported.
"It was really novel at first and quite exciting," the Mail quoted waitress Katie Underwood, 18, as saying before they finally made it out.
"It's been freezing, but we've been lucky that it's a pub and B&B we're trapped in.
.."We've got plenty of coal for our fire, which has been great, and there are rooms upstairs so we have somewhere to sleep, and plenty of food."
The Lion Inn's home website says, "The bar is well known for its good selection of quality real ales" and notes it is recommended by, among others, The Good Pub Guide and the Good Beer Guide.

Summer ....
Today felt like it! Actually the last three days have been warm but it hit 36.9degC today. Too hot for this time of the year and my vegy garden didn't like it in the least.
The next couple of days, hopefully, will be a bit cooler.
I'm not ready for summer yet.
OH and I was going to go up the range today after work - but it was way too hot :( The last two weeks it has rained on the Wednesdays and today is HOT - finger's crossed for better weather next week.

RAIN RAIN RAIN
So after nearly no rain this year (how do you measure 0.2mm?) we finally get some - along with a very fierce storm.

I live in the hills around Perth. We lost power about 5.30pm last night but it had been restored by the time I woke up this morning. Power to my place is generally flaky anyway so we have a generator and back-up batteries so we weren’t too badly off.
The lightening storm was pretty spectacular and the sunset was magnificent. I took some photos that I will check later and upload if they turned out.
My daughter was supposed to go to a birthday party this afternoon. This has been postponed for a couple of days as the birthday girl's house is flooded!
The below ground carpark at work resembles more of a swimming pool than car park, and one of our other offices lost its roof and telecommunications are out at a few branches.
Lots of staff are reporting significant hail damage to cars - apparently the "hail stones the size of golf balls" aren't an exaggeration.
But we got RAIN … wonderful, RAIN! The Bureau of Meteorology are saying that officially Perth recorded 35mm, some people are reporting as much as 70mm fell at their places overnight.
Oh, and more storms are forecast for today.

Perth sweats through near-record 28C night
PERTH sweated through one of the hottest nights on record with the temperature dropping to just 28.1C
The 28.1C overnight minimum was the second hottest March night on record since records commenced in 1897.
By 12.58pm the temperature had soared back to 39.1C, a fraction above the forecast 39C maximum.
Perth Airport had recorded a maximum of 40C and Pearce, about 40km east of the city, recorded a top of 40.3C just after 1pm.
Perth Metro's hottest March night was March 2, 1934 with 28.3C. The average minimum temperature for March is 16.4C.
It was also the eighth hottest night on record and the hottest night since the 29C on February 26, 1997.
The hottest place around the Perth Metropolitan area was at Swanbourne with 28.8C which was their hottest March night since records began in 1993.
According to the Weather Channel the high overnight temperature was caused by a blanket of high cloud which moved in from the Indian Ocean trapping the heat after a blistering day.
“Perth hit 38C yesterday afternoon and then high cloud moved in from the Indian Ocean during the evening and blanketed the city through the night,” says Tom Saunders, Meteorologist at The Weather Channel.
“The combination of the cloud and hot north-easterly winds kept the temperature at almost 30C for most of the night.”
Perth Airport still hasn’t recorded any rain since November 2009, while Perth city has only received 0.2mm so far this year, giving Perth its driest summer on record.

For all of you who are "enjoying" the snow
this is a photo taken from my seat at lunch today ... it was around the 36degC (96degF) mark and a touch humid due to the cyclone up north. Luckily there was a bit of a breeze which kept it bearable.
And, yes thank you, it was a very pleasant lunch :)
Oh, forgot to mention, if you're ever in the area Hainault Vineyard does fantastic wines and lunches.

Mmm .... it IS the middle of November isn't it???
November which, here in the southern hemisphere, means REALLY CLOSE TO SUMMER somehow or other has got very mixed up and brought not just showers but DOWNPOURS ....
Apparently we had 12mm of rain in the 24hrs to 9am this morning. Will have to wait until tomorrow morning to find out how much we got today.

Hot, hot, hot .... hot
I'm over this weather ... two days over 38C (100F) is enough to drive me mad! ... It was 29C (84F) when I was driving to work at 7am this morning.
Tomorrow they're forecasting 33C and storms! I'm even less of a fan of humid weather than I am of heat. Mmmm, maybe I'm just hard to please!

Perth breaks heat record
PERTH is sweltering through the hottest start to the year since records began in 1897.
As the mercury hit 40C this morning, January moved into the record books for the hottest start to the year with an average temperature of 34.5C.
Trains on all lines slowed down this afternoon taking 20kmh from the maximum speed as temperatures hit the 40s but have been sped up by 10kmh at 3pm.
A high pressure system is bringing hot easterlies to WA and sending temperatures soaring.
There was little relief from the heat after the sun went down last night as Perth's overnight temperature dipped to a minimum of 25.4C at 11.37pm.
The hottest ever Perth night was 27.8C recorded in 1989.
By 1.30am last night, the temperature had climbed to 30c.
This time last year Perth had the equal fourth hottest January on record, according to John Ralph from the WA Bureau of Meteorology.
The hottest night ever recorded in WA was in Wittenoom on 21st January 2003 with an overnight low of 35.5C.
“We are going to be tossing and turning in our beds again tonight with the temperatures expected to drop to a hot 24C,” Mr Ralph said.
Relief is on the way with a cool change forecast for tomorrow as a trough turns the wind around to the west.
“The temperature will get cooler as the trough moves inland,” Mr Cook said.
Storms are forecast for Sunday but don’t rush out and cancel plans just yet as Mr Cook said they may not eventuate.
“If there is a storm there is always a chance of lightning but whether we actually get a storm is another question,” he said.
